Remember how glad you are when the first mimosa twigs appear in the house in spring: remember their tender yellow color and delicate, elusive and lovely aroma…
And now imagine that there is a whole wildlife sanctuary of mimosa, “the winter flower of the Riviera”, among the mountains, above the sea and under the blue southern sky. Imagine that its delicious fragrance blends with the freshness of the Alps and salt sea breeze. Imagine that just a short distance away there is the crystal clear cascade of the de la Siagne waterfall, descending to a pristine lake.
Imagine that you can wake up and see this miracle from the window, drink local wine, breathe in the fresh fragrance of mimosa and bathe in the Mediterranean Sea or Saint-Cassien Lake; it is almost like being in Eden. And all this is real.
The ancient city of Tanneron is surrounded by a huge mimosa forest. From January to March flowers exhale fragrance in the reserve. In spring swimming season starts… They say that the name of Tanneron itself means ‘dark, tanned’. And yet Tanneron is not a tourist stronghold. There is no health resort bustle here, neither steaming crowds of tourists nor lineups to sights. The beautiful medieval chapel of Notre Dame de Peygros, the square tower St. Cassien-des-bois, ancient mills used for processing olives and terraces offering magnificent views can all be visited leisurely. And the panoramas opening up to the foot of the Alps lead to dreams and thinking... Don’t forget to pop in a local shop to try flower syrup or local honey nougat, and you will understand the ancient gods who ate only nectar.
Tanneron is a quiet and scent-laden place. A thousand of the fifteen hundred local inhabitants live out of town, in the outskirts. Agriculture, mostly floriculture, and handicrafts are well developed in Tanneron. Masters say that their enamel, paintings and glassware replicate and glorify the generosity of this land.
At one time, mimosa didn’t grow here, and there were few people. It all started when the Côte d’Azur began to shine as a world famous health resort. English aristocrats brought varieties of mimosa to Tanneron from colonial Australia. The plant quickly spread to the mountain slopes from the English gardens. Since then, the perfume industry around the whole world has received the gift of Tanneron – flowers with a wonderful aroma. A droplet of Tanneron is added to the bottles of almost all perfume brands. Fresh bouquets of white Mediterranean mimosa from the sanctuary (preserved by a special technology) are presented as a sign of affection throughout Europe.
Olives, figs and chestnut trees are also cultivated in Tanneron. Local cherries and strawberries are well known in every part of Provence.
The quietness of Tanneron is constant, but it cannot be annoying. If you want some hectic life, Cannes is only 15 km away down the highway. In addition, there are leisure opportunities in Tanneron itself: hikes and seaside strolls, bicycle rides on mountain slopes (which are good even for beginning cyclists) and even… races on vintage cars.
Tanneron looks like the gods’ shelter. But it was created for human beings and will always show hospitality to every visitor.
