On the western edge of the Maritime Alps between the mountains and the sea, at a height open to the skies there is the small city of La Roquette-sur-Siagne. It is a kind of link between Cannes lying 10 km away at the sea and the eternal tranquility of mountain peaks. Any point of La Roquette-sur-Siagne offers a view of the Alps and at the same time, on the other side is the vast panorama of the Cannes coastline.
La Roquette-sur-Siagne is a city of compromise. You can go down to the Cannes quay whenever you want, where stars shine in the daytime and celebrities and royalty walk in the streets. You can spend the evening in glamorous restaurants or casinos. But you should go back to Roquette to wake up one early fresh morning in the middle of the real provincial quietness and go for a peaceful walk about the picturesque country.
Roquette is a real oasis of greenery. Orchards and exotic trees are interlaced with houses. The houses themselves are different too, from very ancient to modern villas and cottages for every taste. The city consists of two parts: the old one (on the Saint Jean hills) and Siagne. The parts are connected with each other by footpaths.
Flower gardens and flower beds are the special care and pride of Roquette citizens. The art of city harmonization is appreciated by the public: Roquette holds the first prize in Flower Contests among provincial cities of France.
Good old provincial traditions predominate in Roquette. To this day there are enormous old sycamores in the main square of the town, where local old-timers gather in the shade. On holidays one more traditional activity is held here in the main square: joint breadbaking. The good neighborliness of Roquette citizens is its special and most important treasure. Anyone can be accepted into this family, especially since Russians have been in the Riviera for several centuries already, and are frequent and welcome guests. You may be treated to a glass of wine or an aromatic bun without ceremony – just like that, for the sake of a good mood.
For those who love more extreme kinds of sports, there is a Mountain Adventure club, which organizes hiking in the Maritime Alps. Ancient pine and oak forests (these cork oaks are used to make corks for French wine), mimosa tangles and meadows of mountain flowers surround Roquette. Just a short distance away from the town, you can come across an owl or a weasel nest, or see a red fox startled by your presence. On these slopes, flocks of sheep wander just like a thousand years ago; and shepherds live a bucolic life out in the country.
“We don’t have any famous architectural monuments,” they say in Roquette, “and we don’t have any long list of great visitors. But we have our nature, which we preserve in its primeval state, our traditional way of life, and we are proud of it”. It is easy for one who appreciates leisure far from urban noises but still boasting of charm and refinement to understand this pride. Fantastic villas, cottages and town houses in an environmentally pristine district of the Riviera are a true pleasure for connoisseurs.
