Between the mountains and the sea at the very edge of Cannes, a cheerful aristocrat Mandelieu - as the French say - “bathes his feet in the sea, while his head revels in groves of sea pines and mimosa”. Some people interminably argue which is best – the mountains or the sea. Mandelieu-la-Napoule easily resolves this dispute: beautiful things should be skillfully combined, just like the perfumer combines fragrances of mimosa and salt breeze into a formula of refined perfumes.
This small city is art and part to both lofty and simple, earthly things. Nothing prevents it from being the home of the Orleans branch of the royal family (family of rulers and pretenders to the Brazilian throne belong to it) and Italian Olympic champion Eddy Ottoz.
Mandelieu is not troubled that a large number of recreational facilities, casinos and entertainment complexes live easily with a neighboring space research center and monastery towers built in the 4th and 11th centuries. Its flag is divided into two parts: in one part there is a red diagonal cross; and in the second, a silver squirrel. Several minutes’ ride separates the luxurious sea coast from the mountain heights fragrant with flowers.
On the hill of Saint Cassian scientists have discovered valuable archeological evidence – at one time, ancient Romans, Phoenicians and Celts lived, worked, rested and fought in this beautiful coast... And it is here that a high-speed highway connecting Mandelieu with the supermodern Cannes airport and the whole world is located.
To find room for everything and not to feel it as a burden is the mark of a real aristocrat.
The city’s coastline is rather short but it’s all converted into either ports or moorings (private and public), or with perfectly equipped beaches. Of course, Mandelieu has a Blue Flag award, a sign of clear water and shores.
Gentle sunshine softly illuminates the mountain slopes and Mandelieu’s beaches almost all year round, until winter. Starting in January “winter suns” light up in Mandelieu’s groves when the famous mimosa bursts into blossom. A whole forest of ambrosial white flowers, which is typical of the Mediterranean coast, is one of the major sights and pride of Mandelieu’s citizens. They are also proud of one more thing – their gardens. Up to 30 000 of annual flowers, up to 30 000 perennial flowers and up to 18 000 bulbous flowers – that is a conservative estimate of the annual planting in Mandelieu. The local community follows the policy of the mayor’s office that the city space should be beautiful and harmonious. When it comes to filling in this bowl between the sea and the mountains or devoting your life to something, then why not flowers? Let them bring joy to people. Kind-heartedness, friendly relationships between the inhabitants and collaboration with the whole world is the main policy of Mandelieu.
The famous markets of Mandelieu are also full of flowers: lavender, mimosa and perfumes based on them are sold here. There are also fruits, local goods, wines, printed fabrics, honey and seafood. On festivals and holidays (the French have them enviably often) all this bustle of flowers, fun, wine and fine cuisine hit the highest level. Mandelieu is as aristocratically generous as always.
