The French Riviera is a world-renowned place for rest and holidays. Monotony and routine will probably never touch the Côte d’Azur, especially the small city of Golfe-Juan. Here everything is as bright as the sea and as colorful as the surrounding gardens.

The city’s past and present are like an array of bright stripes on a beautiful clay vase. It’s no coincidence that ceramic crafts have made Golfe-Juan world famous. To a large extent this happened due to the great master of the modern age, Pablo Picasso. On arriving in Golfe-Juan in 1948, the artist was so enchanted by the beauty of the city that he stayed there for many years.

For Picasso, this period of life in Golfe-Juan became a time of inspiration and exploration of the secrets of beauty. He visited local workshops, studied, experimented and constantly created masterpieces – more than 40 000 ceramic pieces! Many of his works remain in Golfe-Juan up to this day. For example, his Man with a Lamb statue stands in the city square. The National Picasso Museum War and Peace in Golfe-Juan offers other works by the great artist inspired by the craftsmanship of local potters. With its animals, birds, human figures and arrangements of splinters looking either like flowers or explosions, the War and Peace exposition is stunning. To get the full picture, it is worth seeing another museum, where ceramics of local craftsmen are exhibited, and visiting the World Ceramic Biennale.
For artists, Golfe-Juan is a symbol of inspiration. For ceramic masters, it is a source of clay with amazing, unique qualities. For history lovers, it is the very shore where Napoleon landed when he escaped from exile in Elba. It was here that the Emperor’s tragic and triumphal return to Paris started.
For those who just want to relax, Golfe-Juan will also become a real source of inspiration. A convenient port sheltered from all winds and a comfortable, supermodern beach provide the full array of water and sports entertainment: seaside strolls, yachting, motor boat and catamaran rides and diving. For underwater swimming lovers, night diving is offered, as well as excursions to look at the sea floor flora and fauna.
The old city is nestled above the picturesque skyline of Port Camille, still redolent with the atmosphere of the ancient Mediterranean. All the charm of Mediterranean antiquity lives on in restaurants rich in seafood delicacies and masterpieces of Provençal cuisine, shady streets, pretty houses and villas, gardens and flowers. The locals treat guests with warmth and kindness, and with that special generosity which is characteristic of the inhabitants of rich coastland. Those who want to feel the indescribably friendly atmosphere of Provence and the Riviera must visit the local food markets. All products here without exception are natural and ecologically clean.

A painting by the famous French neo-impressionist Paul Signac portrays a typical evening in Golfe-Juan. Pink sails are flying above the sea in the reddish light of sunset. Peaceful mountains and clear sea seem to look at each other in eternal captivation. This coastal city, which has given inspiration to both great and ordinary people, will never be infected with routine.
