Connoiseurs say “Kan”, not “Kanz”. Admittedly, connoiseurs often express a different opinion about films, too, differing from the opinion of mere mortals. Nevertheless, every person on this planet knows where the center of the film empire is located. Of course, it is in Cannes, on Promenade de la Croisette, on the scarlet steps of the Festival Palace.
Many things in Cannes live by the rules of cinema and rules of beauty. Celebrity parties on beaches are organized by famous actors, directors and screenwriters. Moreover, with the aim of presenting this or that film, producers make real shows: either fireworks over water, or underwater spectaculars. Cannes has an atmosphere of eternal holiday, glamor, aristocratic bustle, rumors, paparazzi’s flashes and festival fever (almost like at the Olympic Games). Indeed, apart from the film festival in May, both Cannes Lions in July and annual cellular technologies congress, and commercial real estate exhibitions are held here. A famous fireworks festival is also held above the Gulf of La Napoule.
Cannes has almost always been glamorous. This is the city that once attracted an English earl, a former chancellor who stayed in the fishing village by chance. Enchanted by the nature, air and the coast, the Englishman built his residence here, and later other English and French aristocrats followed him.
Cannes still remembers Napoleon, who used to visit this place, as well as the families of Russian monarchs who have relaxed here since the 19th century, and Princess Diana, too. It seems that nobody here remains a mere mortal anymore after joining the royal atmosphere of Cannes. Maupassant wrote about this city: “Princes, princes and princes everywhere”. The writer himself had a house here. Many artists used to visit Cannes or live here, including Charlie Chaplin, Prosper Mérimée, Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve.
Still, Cannes is not just chic and Bohemian. It is also a quiet, small European town with lovely houses of antique architecture, sheltered from the winds by mountains and hills, surrounded by golden beaches and azure seas. Cannes is located on a picturesque green hill; not far from the Festival Palace there is a whole garden of just roses. You can take a stroll along the streets descending to the sea, popping into shops and restaurants – there are hundreds of them here, for any taste. On Promenade de la Croisette, for example, there are boutiques of all the world’s trendsetters, and antiques, knickknacks and rarities can be found at one of the town’s markets.
Gorgeous villas revel in orchards and flowers. The weather is always fine in Cannes, and every day brings a choice between the gentle sea, golden sand and natural tranquility – and the brilliant Bohemian life.
