Once upon a time these picturesque beaches used to be only fishing villages. Now no one believes it… There are Rolls-Royces and Lamborghinis carelessly parked on the gorgeous shampooed streets. Dazzling white suits during the day and black tuxedos at night. And white villas sunk in gardens, with white yachts on the skyline. From Saint-Tropez to Monaco you enter another world, into a fairy tale about Cinderella, or about stars coming down from the heights.
There are probably more stars here than ordinary people. Although they mainly prefer to live half-incognito. There is nothing surprising in the situation when you look behind and recognize Sylvester Stallone, for example. No one in the Côte d’Azur will be shocked at this: since the film “And God Created Woman” was shot in Saint-Tropez with Brigitte Bardot in the starring role, and the famous red stairs appeared in Cannes, leading to the Festival Cinema Palace. The Côte d’Azur is a place where legends meet. Boutiques visited by Princess Diana are perfectly remembered here. And in Nice there are lively stories about visits of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna, or the Russian classic writer Anton Chekhov, or the leader of the October Revolution, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin… By the way, people are more accustomed to Russians here: since Tsarist times, the Côte d’Azur was the favorite holiday destination of the Russian aristocracy. For example, Russian language and literature are taught at schools in Nice. And in the streets you can still meet descendants of the Golitsyns, Obolenskys and Romanovs.
And it’s not only celebrities that decorate this little paradise. In Antibes, across the Bay of Angels, opposite Nice, there are hundreds of yachts and racing boat sails pointing high to the skies. The yacht belonging to the Queen of Great Britain is here. Twice a year sailing competitions are held in Antibes.
The Côte d'Azur is a golden or silver strip of sandy and shingle beaches, palaces and palm trees. Many villas (for example, the one which belonged to Baroness Ephrussi de Rothschild) are open to visitors.
Once a year, Formula 1 race cars rip along streets with special markings. The local residents even don’t need tickets – they can observe the contest from their own balconies.
Every village and every town on the Côte d’Azur has petanque courses, of course, - this is a refined game of aristocrats.
If your head is spinning from the stellar brilliance, you can easily rest on any of the beaches along the coast. The Côte d’Azur is famous for its water being warmer than the air. This creates an inimitable sense of softness in everything: even sails glide smoothly above the water, and parachutists float like dandelion seeds… Beaches of the Côte d’Azur have been awarded the Blue Flag. Thus, France has officially confirmed the exquisite cleanliness of the water and beaches before the world community.
The Côte d’Azur was once a favorite place of work for Picasso, Cézanne and Matisse. Not far from Nice, for example, there is a chapel completely ornamented by Henri Matisse. Landscapes of gardens, lavender fields and coasts almost duplicate the masterpieces of great impressionist painters.
You can find anything you want on the Côte d’Azur, both sensational celebrity life and lyrical solitude. Believe in the Cinderella fairy tale: Côte d’Azur adds nobility and stellar brightness to everyone who comes in contact with it.
