Specialists in antiquity and sights preserve many places on Cyprus. As for Paphos, it has been taken under the protection of UNESCO utterly and completely. Here there are no undistinguished nooks: everything is able to boast of old age, beauty and splendor.
According to legend, the Beauty herself – Aphrodite – came out of the sea to the golden sand of one of these beaches, Petra Tou Romiou. Since ancient times there has been a custom on Cyprus to hold an annual sumptuous, noisy flower holiday, Anthestiria, so called in honor of the goddess of love and beauty. If you go deeper into the groves near Paphos, you can find Aphrodite’s bathhouse – a shadowed grotto near Polis.
The times of myths are gone, and the renowned military leader, Alexander III of Macedon, founded a city called Paphos on this island. Archeologists say that the most valuable findings of the Mediterranean region have been discovered in Paphos. Here is the birthplace of human culture, art and architecture. This is evidenced by ancient mosaics of the Roman period, royal tombs carved in the rock, ruins of Christian basilicas of the Byzantine period and finally monasteries, such as Chrysorrogiatissa, where not only traditional order, but also a recipe for ancient monastery wine is preserved.
Despite the abundance of antiquities, Paphos is a modern city, a developing tourism center and a popular resort around the world. The famous Coral Bay is a favorite place for swimming, diving and yachting from spring to late autumn… Underwater restaurants, big coffee houses and cosy cafes, bright night clubs and secluded romantic eateries – here you have lots of places to choose from. And, of course, try “meze” which is loved by everyone – that is when all dishes at a restaurant are served one by one. Fish “meze” is especially popular; it includes delicacies from coast rainbow trout caught right here in the sea.
Peaceful rest enthusiasts will like the secluded shady nooks of Polis or the Gulf of Akamas with picturesque villages where the local residents treat visitors to cheese and scones; paths above lovely bays and grottos surrounded by rocks will attract attention; vineyards on the hillsides and leisurely conversations with a glass of wine will charm you.
The international airport in Paphos accepts flights daily from all over the world, including Russia. It takes only three and a half hours to fly from Moscow to Paphos. Eternal cheerful summer, subtropical climate, mild sea and friendly Cypriots – this is where the fascination of this island resides, as everlasting and ancient as the Beauty itself.
