Legend has it that when the brave king Richard the Lionheart came to Cyprus, he joined the city of Famagusta to the British crown and because the island’s emperor. This picturesque and rich place was so pleasing to the king, that he even had his wedding on Cyprus.
The true story of a former quiet fishing village started then, and soon it became a large center of the ancient Christian world. Once, as the legend says, there were 365 churches in Famagusta, as many as there are days in a year.
Famagusta is located at the crossroads of cultures and trade routes; it has absorbed everything around it for centuries, enriching it with traditions. Since the times of Genoese merchants, Famagusta won fame as a city of progress, where most ambitious dreams come true.
Ancient fortresses and towers (in one of them, according to the legend, the dramatic story of Othello and Desdemona took place) are a proof that dynamic and well-developed Famagusta was a temptation and a bone of discord for many rulers. This peaceful city survived the last invasion in the previous century, in the 1970s, and Famagusta has belonged to Turkey since then.
Today Famagusta is a city of students and tourists. No one uses car alarm systems here, because nobody fears anything: friendly citizens will always show you the way; they will help you and sometimes even invite you to be their guest.
Famagusta is the city of youth. One of the best known and largest clubs of Northern Cyprus is situated here, the Lion’s Garden. Night life is hustling all the way round, and the wealthy students compete with each other in “coolness” of cars and bikes.
Nevertheless, Famagusta is a quiet city. The tourist boom hasn’t yet reached its peak here; that’s why everything is inexpensive, simple and available. Villas, cascades of cottages, small and large hotels look out from the greenery in one place or another. Building highrises is prohibited here, but the city offers wonderful fruit, laurel and olive gardens instead. There are many wild beaches here, where there are no crowds, but lots of white sand, blue sea waves, and the mild sun shines 10 months a year.
Quiet and beautiful, rich in old relics and interesting places, equipped with the best port in Cyprus and gorgeous beaches, Famagusta was and still remains a city of many opportunities, the place where all plans and ambitions can come true.
