“Antalya is a beautiful city. It is very attractive for visits; and although large and crowded, is still very well thought-out… City gardens produce wonderful fruit, including a remarkable sort of apricot which is exported to Egypt and considered a real luxury there”. These lines are from the diary of the Arab explorer Ibn Battuta, who travelled around Turkey in 1335-40.
More than 600 years have passed. But Antalya, the pearl of the Turkish coast, attracts travelers just like before. Orchards still bring forth heavy crops (bananas, citrus fruits, olives) considered to be a real luxury in other countries. And the turquoise of the sea always roars under the sapphire skies like a living Eastern fairy tale.
This land of milk and honey has always been a matter of disputes. The Greeks, Romans and Turks – all nations of the Mediterranean region have fought battles for the right to own Antalya. Now it is a peaceful city. Leisure, entertainment and freedom from care are the themes of every sunny day in Antalya. And there are 300 sunny days a year here.
From ancient times Antalya inherited rich architectural and cultural legacy: Roman ruins, basilicas, temples and mosques, observation walls and towers all create an inimitable image of the city.
Antalya is the capital of festivals. Music, dances, opera, ballet, cinematography – life pulses in here. Bars, clubs, restaurants, coffee houses, excellent shopping and the existence of an international airport and developed transport network have all brought renown to Antalya as the best Turkish resort. More recently, there has been surge in interest to this region in Europe: over the past few years, more than a hundred thousand Europeans have bought real estate here.
The coastal landscape has been formed in this part of the world in such a way that some parts of the coast were submerged. As a result, there are many cosy gulfs, shoal waters and bays that are ideal for swimming, yachting and diving near Antalya. The climate is mitigated by the gentle sea (owing to frequent sea breezes) and humidity from the mountains: Antalya is famous for three very beautiful, pure and high waterfalls.
According to legend, Antalya got its name in memory of the ancient king Attalus. He ordered his people to find heaven on Earth. They searched for it for a long time and found the place that we now know as Antalya.
